The investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election is likely to enter a new phase on Monday, Reuters reported. As yet, it is unknown what the indictment is about.

A source familiar with the situation has told Reuters that the first charges were approved by a federal grand jury on Friday and are still sealed under orders of a federal judge.

The source added that the indictment could be unsealed as soon as Monday.

"The indictment could mark a dramatic turn in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 race and any possible links with officials from President Donald Trump’s campaign," Reuters reported.

The investigation by Department of Justice special counsel Robert Mueller was launched in May, after US intelligence argued in January that Russia tried to influence the outcome of the vote by supporting Donald Trump and damaging his opponent Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning.

The Russian government has repeatedly and vehemently denied the claims, stressing that Moscow never meddles in the domestic affairs of foreign nations. Trump has also regularly denied the allegations.

Many possible charges and incidents are under investigation by Mueller's team, including possible links between Trump and foreign governments as well as potential money laundering, tax evasion and other financial crimes, sources told Reuters.
