The deputy chairman of the Russian lower house's Culture Committee in an interview to Sputnik commented on the possible impact of the US' recent withdrawal from UNESCO in terms of world cultural heritage.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The deputy chairman of the Russian lower house's Culture Committee Vladimir Bortko, in an interview to Sputnik, stated that the US' withdrawal from UN heritage agency UNESCO will have a negative impact both on the world culture and Washington itself.

"The US contribution to this organization was considerable. It is also bad for the world culture and the United States itself," Bortko said.

Earlier in the day, the United States announced its decision to withdraw from UNESCO. The country will remain a member of UNESCO until December 31, 2018, and from 2019 will be in the status of observer in this international organization.
