"The discussion was held today after debates on sanctions by EU leaders and foreign ministers," the source, who asked to remain anonymous, said.

"The permanent representatives shared the opinion, expressed at these discussions, that there is no reason at present to alter the EU restrictive measures against Russia," the source said.

Last week, a number of EU foreign ministers stated that the current sanctions against Russia are optimal and should remain unchanged.

The European Union and the United States have imposed sanctions on Russia over its alleged involvement in the Ukrainian crisis, a claim Moscow has repeatedly denied.

The latest round of sanctions came into effect on September 12, targeting Russian defense companies, alongside the country’s largest banks, energy companies and certain high profile individuals.
