BRUSSELS, September 9 (RIA Novosti) – The Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (Coreper) will assess the implementation of the Ukrainian ceasefire agreement and return to the questions of imposing new sanctions against Russia on Wednesday, Maja Kocijancic, a spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Tuesday.

"The written procedure yesterday was indeed prolonged to allow member-states to respond and have time for their internal consultations, this has happened. You have seen that the package has been adopted. We will now have our next Coreper meeting tomorrow that will return to the issue, including on the issue of the assessment of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the peace plan,” Kocijancic said at a press briefing.

On Monday, the European Union officially adopted a new round of sanctions against Russia over its alleged participation in "destabilizing eastern Ukraine.” The new measures are expected to come into force in the next few days pending the assessment of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Kiev forces and Ukrainian militia, signed at the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine on September 5 in Belarusian capital, Minsk.

The European Union and the United States have already imposed several rounds of economic sanctions over Moscow’s alleged participation in the Ukrainian conflict. The Russian side reacted by introducing a year-long ban on certain food imports from the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway.
