The Russian government has allocated 7 billion rubles (around $230 million) from the federal budget for development programs at the Kurchatov Institute, renowned for its achievements in nuclear science, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets said on Tuesday.

Speaking on the institute's 70th anniversary, she said restoring Russia’s leading position in science is a very high priority for the country.

President Vladimir Putin congratulated the staff of Russia’s leading nuclear research and development center on its anniversary, praising the institute’s "glorious achievements,” which have helped build "a reliable nuclear shield” for the country.

The institute’s R&D projects are of strategic importance to Russia, Putin said in a statement read out by Presidential Chief of Staff Sergei Ivanov at the celebration.
